MONOTYPES
Monotype a type of printmaking made by drawing or painting on a smooth non-absorbent surface, eg. Zinc Plates or Plexiglas.
I create my monotypes by applying oil printing ink with a roller to the plate. I use rags, brushes, solvents and feathers to draw and manipulate the ink, this helps to create light and tone. The plate is then placed on a printing bed and printing paper is placed on top and run through the press. How the ink is applied and manipulated will be reflected in the print.
Each monotype produced is an unique piece of work and can not be repeated. It is a technique that yields
only one good impression from each prepared plate. Monotypes are prized because of their unique textural qualities.
This process was invented in 1609 by Artist G.B. Castiglione. Rembrandt, Degas, Gauguin, Pissarro, Marc Chagall
to name but a few also created monotypes.
